The Dave Matthews Band got its start early in 1991 when the desire to record his own music led Dave Matthews to put together a group of musicians that would come to form the band.
Based in Charlottesville, Va., Matthews enlisted the help of jazz musicians LeRoi Moore (saxophone) and Carter Beauford (drums), the band began to come together. With John D'earth on guitar, Stefan Lessard on bass, Peter Griesar on keyboards and violin specialist Boyd Tinsley, the band put Matthews' music on tape and got the ball rolling.
The Dave Matthews Band (better known to fans as DMB) made their first public appearance at a local Earth Day event that spring. One month later, they had their first official gig at a private party and, in a short amount of time, developed a reputation for their infectious new sound.
The Dave Matthews Band quickly developed a regional following, and released its first album, "Remember Two Things" in 1993 on its own Bama Rags label. The independently-produced album earned a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a rarity for an independent album at that time.
One year later, the Dave Matthews Band's first major-label release, "Under The Table And Dreaming" became an instant chart success. The band toured in support of the album and played to sold out venues all over the country, and the band's popularity continued to grow throughout the end of the 20th century.
"Crash" came out two years later and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The Dave Matthews Band continued touring and released a number of live albums recorded at various concerts across the country. Their 1998 studio release, "Before These Crowded Streets" debuted at No. 1 on the album charts and the band continued its success on the road.
The Dave Matthews Band has won several Grammy Awards for their creative efforts, and DMB has continued touring and producing studio and live recordings and are heavily involved in environmental issues all over the world. They continue to perform some of their biggest hits, including "What Would You Say," "Crush," "Satellite" and "Crash Into Me."
